It all started when Bickmore was extremely inspired by the natural history museums that were located in major European cities. In the 19th century, New York was a fairly large city in the United States, but there was no such museum there. Therefore, Bickmore spent many years lobbying for the creation of a natural history museum in New York City.

Initially, the museum was housed in the Arsenal building in Central Park, which had previously been used as a military warehouse. The museum’s collections grew rapidly, and in 1874 the museum needed more space. So it moved to a new location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Collections of the New York Museum of Natural History

Since the mid-19th century, the museum has significantly expanded its collections and research programs. In the 21st century, the museum covers a wide range of disciplines, including:

· anthropology

· astrophysics

· biology

· geology

· paleontology.

One of the most iconic exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History is the fossilized skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex, which was discovered in Montana in 1902 and acquired by the museum in 1906. The Tyrannosaurus has become a symbol of the museum. It is depicted on many of its logos and promotional materials. In addition, the main exhibit can be seen in the famous movie Night at the Museum.

The museum is also divided into several halls, each corresponding to its own theme and collections. Some of the major exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History include:

· The Hall of Biodiversity, where you can learn about the diversity of life on Earth, including the processes that drive evolution, the interdependence of species and the impact of human activities on the natural world.

· Dinosaur Hall, where you can see a variety of dinosaurs that dominated the planet in the Mesozoic era. The hall features life-size models of some of the most famous dinosaurs, such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops. This hall demonstrates the diversity and complexity of the world’s oceans, from the smallest plankton to the largest whales. The exhibition features life-size models of marine creatures as well as various interactive displays that explain to visitors the biology and behavior of different species. There is also a copy of the blue whale, the largest animal on Earth.

Additionally, in the twenty-first century, the American Museum of Natural History has a large collection of specimens and artifacts that are accessible for research and study by scientists from all over the world.

Since the mid-19th century, the museum has undergone many stages of transformation and expansion, becoming the most popular and most visited institution worldwide in the 21st century. The museum is committed to promoting science literacy and public engagement through exhibitions, educational programs and outreach.
